Although I've never lived there and currently live some distance from the place, when you say 'the ciy', I immediately think of New York, not San Francisco. Depending upon your audience, others may think of Kuala Lumpur, Tibet, London, Pondicherry or Rome. Don’t you think that it's a tad ironic that your *primary audience* probably understands what city you're referring to even though you're communicating globally?
