Internet music radio death sentence upheld
Can public stations fill the hard-news radio hole?
| | That's the question raised here, where the writer says they don't know any public station doing that. Well, Vermont Public Radio and KMUD come to mind. More typical, however, are popular local NPR stations such as KMUW in Wichita, which have some local news, but packed around the edges of standard public radio fare. |
| | I know a lot of radio, but I know far from everything. I'm hoping ya'll can help out here. |
| | What we're looking for are public stations (they don't have to be NPR affiliates KMUD isn't, for example) that are go-to places on the dial when hard news breaks. |
| | If there aren't, that's okay. I still think it can (and should) be done and that it will be an advantage to start with a new station that is born with a public mission, rather than an existing station with a by-the-numbers public radio legacy. |
| | But if there are models out there, it would help to know them. |
| | Post your answers here. Thanks. |
Burning news
| | Current Situation: This is a "fuels driven" fire that is burning in steep, rocky and broken terrain. The fire is established in the San Rafael Wilderness east of Manzana and south of the Sisquoc River, control of the eastern flank remains difficult. Direct line construction is underway in the wilderness and all efforts are being made to protect natural and cultural resources. Firefighters are also implementing a contingency plan to tie in line on the northwest flank of the fire, south of the Sisquoc River. Control efforts are focused on containing the fire south of the Sisquoc River, east of Schoolhouse Canyon, north of the Figueroa Catway and west of Buckhorn Road. Public and Firefighter Safety remains the top priority. |
| | Significant Events: Conditions were favorable today and firefighters conducted a burning operation to improve containment on the northwest flank. Bulldozers will continue to construct line on San Rafael Ridge to Santa Cruz Peak as a primary holding line in case the fire continues to move east. Bulldozers also continue constructing secondary lines along the northwest side of the fire as a contingency to protect the community of Tepusquet, if the fire jumps the Sisquoc River. |
