Green skies for red eyes
| | I was lucky enough to finagle a window seat upgrade into business class yesterday, which made it easier to sleep on the redeye from San Francisco to London. Luckily, the window was on the left, or north, side of the plane. Luckier still, the Northern Lights were hanging up there in the skies over Canada, a perfect treat from our vantage 35,000 feet over Minnesota and Michigan's upper peninsula. |
| | I even waved down to Chip Hoagland, who lives down under the wing (and the lights) there somewhere. |
| | The conditions weren't ideal. There was a ot of light inside the plane, and the window was dirty and blemished. And even small bumps in the flight tended to blur stars and lights from towns, through exposures that ran up to three seconds. But still, the sight was amazing. |
We serve to aim
| | So I arrived in sunny England, took the Heathrow Express to... well, not to Paddington. Rather to a dark tunnel, where the train has been stopped for more (or so it seems) than the fifteen minutes promised by Heathrow Express promotional messages for getting to Paddington. There's a problem with a door. No idea how long this will take. Grr. |
| | [Later...] A voice, on behalf of the Customer Service Team, has just thanked us for our patience. And we're rolling again. |
| | One nice thing: wi-fi on the train. |
| | Not as nice: an 18¢/minute "roaming fee" by T-Mobile. |
| | Still haven't figured out the dialing system. Calls don't go through. I got one text message, but I'm not sure if the others have gone out. Anyway, if you're expecting a call or a message from me, my Customer Service Gland thanks you for your patience. |

Unlock your phone and buy a local UK pay as you go SIM card. Much cheaper for calling around London. Swap it out with your US SIM card when you get home.
There are a few shops in London that do that sort of thing, down on Tottenham Court road porbably.

The UK dialing system:
1. All non-cell calls inside the UK are prefixed by their area codes, all of which start with 01 or 02
2. UK cell phone numbers start with 07. They don't use geographic codes, and the number tells callers that they're calling a cell phone (and paying the rate for it)
3. Dialling the US? Number is (eg) 001 415 xxx xxxx
