I agree we need a degree of perspective about the iPhone. However, while I am no fan of AT&T, it should be pointed out that AT&T may be getting mote than its share of the blame.
Apple did an elegant job with the on-line activation, but they could have made the process even simpler for existing AT&T customers if they had allowed users to activate the phone the way they activate every other GSM phone - by inserting their old SIM card in the new phone. That would have left the iTunes activation to those people who had purchased new service or who wanted to port their number from another carrier.
Also, the choice to use the slow EDGE network was Apple's. AT&T offers HSDPA in most of the country but Apple chose not to support it, most likely for space and power reasons. It may be a reasonable trade-off but is not the fault of AT&T.
