Re: Wednesday, June 27, 2007
Doc says that Steve Urquhart is trying to make politics truly democratic. (As an aside, note neither the original constitution, nor the bill of rights mentions the word democracy. In a democracy the many can overrule the few. What was really setup here in the USofA is a constitutional republic - where government is limited and we elect - democratically - people to uphold the constitution.)
That said - unless people are involved in the primaries, we certainly don't have a democratic election. Think of the 2 billionaires we had to choose from last time around.
Case in point - in the republican debates so far, Ron Paul has been slaughtering the others - at least in terms of on-line polls:
ABC poll:

MSNBC poll:

CNN poll:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/debates/scorecard/gop.debate/results.html
Yet Ron Paul is virtually unheard of in the population so far - he's huge online (one of the biggest Technorati searches) - yet is almost blacked-out in the major media.
Regardless of where you stand in terms of the political spectrum, this case seems to clearly illustrate the very thin nature of our democracy - the press chooses our candidate - and it is guaranteed to be one of the pre-selected top runners from each party. A DemoPublican who tows the party line will be our next president. Business as usual.
