This line seems a bit disingenuous: "It makes the ad more personal and has a higher click through rate, or so we¹ve been told."
Really? You think readers of your site might be more likely to click on an ad if it appears that you've endorsed the product? Might they even forget for a moment that they're looking at a traditional banner ad and actually associate the link with legitimate content, since it's got your name on it, just like your blog posts?
I've never found any reason to think that the advertising on TechCrunch seeps into the content. It's one of the best sources on the web for information about Web 2.0 companies. But it's as important to maintain the appearance of impropriety as it is to actually avoid impropriety. Trust is a fragile thing.
