The original source, according to Dr. Isenberg, was Amara's Law, which "roughly" goes "We tend to overestimate the short-term impact of technological change and underestimate its long-term impact."
I much prefer the more quotable "We overestimate in the short term and underestimate in the long". I've used that one so much by now (sometimes attributing it to Paul Saffo, which Dr. Isenberg says is an error) that I'm afraid people are starting to mis-attribute me with the original idea, which appears to be Amara's.
Maybe somebody can set the record straight. I'll ask.
