About the passenger pigeon: I read the book "1491" recently, and the author put together an interesting speculation on that. Huge numbers of Indians died before they even knew about Europeans due to diseases spreading (malaria, Smallpox, etc). Prior to that event, pigeons had been kept somewhat in check by the native population - without that check, their numbers skyrocketed (kind of like deer in the suburbs today).
Those huge flocks were unsustainable over time.
