Inhospitality
So I'm looking for help in figuring out what "features" of our free Net access at the Crown Plaza in Brussels we can debug by telling the hotel, specifically, what to fix.
One problem I've already worked out: sending email. They only let you use their provider's SMTP server, but don't tell you that. A call to the front desk got that done.
The other two problems are still unfixed. One is getting GMail via POP. It doesn't work either for me or for my roomie. I can get POP mail from my server at Searls.com. But not Gmail. (The error is "server not responding 706 lost connection to server") The other is AIM and Jabber instant messaging. Both don't work. The hotel says they don't know what the problem is.
I've seen IM blocked before, but I'm not sure how (much less why) they do it. Any ideas? Thanks.
Bonus bug: This FAQ from T-Mobile does not provide the suffix to the login ID required by U.S. T-Mobile customers roaming in Europe.
[Later...] Somebody at the hotel just told me that the hotel blocks many ports on guest computers. In the meeting areas, it's better to use ethernet. They have lots of ethernet cables.

Handbasket weaving
If there was a high road left to take in the matter of the Santa Barbara News-Press meltdown, it was blown to smithereens by the paper when it ran a (now linkproof) front page piece last Sunday suggesting a link between former editor Jerry Roberts and child pornography.
Jerry has mounted his own defense, naturally. But Craig Smith puts the matter in its only reasonable perspective:
I would say that if there was anyone who was still sitting on the fence that divided News-Press owner Wendy McCaw's supporters from her opponents she pushed them into her opponent's camp with Sunday's attempt to slime the reputation of former editor Jerry Roberts. I wouldn't be surprised if a number of supporters end up jumping that fence to defect as well.

Bulls-eye checkbox
A demand-side approach to news supply.
 Bonus link.

GMail doesn't POP using the standard POP port, it does it by SSL on port 587. See if your hotel is blocking 587.

It also uses 995 to do SSL SMTP, if they're blocking that, that would explain your inability to use the google servers.

Hope this helps.

Some AIM clients allow tunneling over port 80 (HTTP). iChat will let you change this for both AIM and Jabber based messaging.

You're right.

Can you VPN out and tunnel all your traffic through the VPN?

I would not pick on your Belgian hotel. I had problems in most hotels in several countries traveling through Europe last October. I also faced outrageous pricing. In several countries, I found the solution was to go to an Internet cafe and use my Gmail account over my POP account.
