Quote du jour
Using Twitter for literate communication is about as likely as firing up a CB radio and hearing some guy recite 'The Iliad'
That's Bruce Sterling, being found by Laurent Haug in the Herald Tribune.

Getting to the art of the matter
Brian Solis: Stating that the industry is entering the age of PR 3.0 is absurd, premature, and irresponsible.

Learning the (not so) hard way
So I'm in London's Waterloo Station, waiting to take the Eurostar train to Brussels. Very jet-lagged, considering that I hardly slept on the plane and my body still thinks it's 3am, Pacific. Just had a nice English breakfast and a very useful text message exchange with JP Rangaswami, who clued me in to the somewhat confuzzing logic involved with dialing UK numbers from a US mobile phone while in the UK. I'm here just infrenquently enough to forget what The Deal is with that.
But I'm getting on the Net now, which was the challenge here, thanks to my T-Mobile account, which lets me roam in Europe, the help page says. Except that there doesn't seem to be an easy explanation of What You Need To Do if you're roaming from the U.S., which is affix @t-mobile.co.uk to your login ID. I got that clue from the help line, which thankfully answered the phone very quickly.
The number to dial for help begins with a 0, which one needs to drop when dialing the 0044 prefix. Or something like that. I couldn't figger that out for my groggy self. So, a big thanks to JP for helping me out with that.
Bonus link: an international calling prefix guide.
[Later...] Right after I wrote the above, I had my second close call of the day. (The first came when I parked my butt in its usual place in a domestic airport lounge, where it probably would have stayed, forcing a missed plane, if my sister hadn't called to remind me that my flight was out of the International Terminal, with a whole 'nuther security gauntlet, etc.) I left the cafe, walked down to the Eurostar terminal, did the ticket/security/passport-stamping thing, and walked to the men's room at the far end of the terminal, before I realized that I had left my bag at the cafe. A security dude had to escort me up to the cafe, where the bag was still sitting. He told me "If that's spotted without an owner, it might be blown up within 25 minutes."
But I got it, and the train, and now I'm about to go to a late dinner somewhere around Brussels' old town plaza with Steve Lewis before crashing hard for the night. According to my little GPS, the whole trip (a car, two planes, two trains, a subway, much hauling of luggage by foot and a cab ride) took twenty-one hours. Feels like it, too.

Re Twitter: Depends a lot on what the definition of "literate communication" is, doesn't it?

Just as an example, what exactly is illiterate about "I'm having dinner at the north end of the SFO International terminal."

But it's a damn entertaining quote, still.
