Fudge in the news silage
In respect to NBC's use of the Cho Files, the New York Times reports,
In interviews yesterday several competitors questioned some of NBC¹s decisions concerning the way it distributed the images, which went out accompanied by a list of rules for how they could be used, including points like: "No Internet use. No archival use. Do not resell," and "Mandatory credit; NBC News."
The chief source of complaint about NBC seemed to be that it had failed to understand how extraordinary and sensitive the images really were, and that it erred in treating them like a news exclusive.
Paul Friedman, the vice president of CBS News, said NBC had not done enterprise reporting to come into possession of this material, but had "picked it up in its mailroom."
And while the rules about usage were fairly standard for the television news business, Mr. Friedman said that "in this instance it seemed inappropriate" for NBC to be so proprietary about material of such sensitive nature.
Pointage from Mediabistro.com, which I learned about from Xeni.
 Bonus linkage to Scoobietron.
More pushback from Shelley, Dave Rogers, Ian Betteridge.
Question. Is it actually possible to have a reasonable conversation about this stuff? Or is this a black hole from which no light can escape no matter how bright anybody's case may be? Looks to me like the latter.
Here's another question. If we were all in a room, talking with each other as human beings — rather than at each other as bloggers — would we make any more progress? Just wondering.
Ipatrix is trying. So is Mickeleh.

Setting coordinates
My week in the Bay Area ended up being mostly for business. But I'm going to try to make it to Podcast Hotel this afternoon. (Later: didn't. Meetings went too long. Sorry.)
Next Tuesday I fly to Brussels for Identity Open Space. Then on Saturday I take the train to London for more business & stuff. Then back home.

Wares and Wears
Andrew the Tupperware Man is to airtight plastic seals what Thomas Mahon of English Cut is to grey worsted. Or so I discovered via Jonathan Guthrie of the Financial Times. Other biz bloggers mentioned are CEOs rather than sole proprietors: Bob Lutz of GM, Jonathan Schwartz of Sun Microsystems, Tom Glocer of Reuters. It's a fun piece. Unfortunately, most of it is behind a paywall.
