Imus knew he was screwed before he hit the next commercial break, same as I knew that Howard Dean had lost the election when NPR woke me up with, "The Scream". It's something that every professional broadcaster knows instinctivly. You go into a cold sweat when it happens. This morning I heard Imus on the phone saying something like, "They caught me asleep". Yeah, they did Don. After that many years and scrapes with outraged partisans and just plain reading the audience, you knew that you had lost control and you were done. Take note all you media stars and wannabes. The moment you screw up in a high octane vehicle like live broadcast, you'll burn very publicly in the smoking wreckage of your intentions.
