Context is King...
Indeed.
Imagine this. Elvis goes to Sun Records and records a few sides.
Col. Sam Parker realizes he has struck gold.
He goes to radio stations and asks them to demo this exciting young man.
They agree and offer to play the new Elvis records immediatley. "Hold on boy!", says Parker. "You're going to have sign a contract for $5,000.00 before you play ANY of that music.
In this alternate version of history we never would have heard of Elvis Presley. It took wide-spread media exposure on radio, TV and print to make Elvis the star who made Parker a very wealthy man. Why? Because currency has to have circulation and acceptance before it has any value.
Parker knew how to turn a truck driver into money in the bank.
Newspapers who lock readers out just don't get that readership is the ONLY thing they have to sell.
