I'd imagine you could just replace the current comments with haloscan or other external hosted comment system. I'm not sure something didn't change with your homepage though. Wasn't there a Discuss link at the bottom of EVERY day's list on the home page? Now it's current day only on the home page and you have to click the link for the day you want to comment on to see the discuss link for that day.
