A few months back Tim Rutten of the LA Times had a great piece reporting (among other surprises) the fact that his paper actually makes good money. Just not enough to satisfy Wall Street.
The LA times that lands in my driveway every Sunday has the heft of a log. It could hardly be more fat with advertising as well as editorial.
So I have a problem with people (Scoble included) saying newspapers are dead. They're not. They're just getting old and need to adapt. Some are. Most aren't.
As for local ownership, it's great unless your owner isn't operating in reality, which is our problem here in Santa Barbara. But that's a whole 'nuther ball of worms.
Miss the Gillmor Gang, btw. Maybe Steve will reconvene us soon...
