Re: Tragedy of the Comcast
I've read several of your posts about viewing internet access as a public utility and your articles about the subject in Linux Journal. Other than wait for this issue to hit critical mass or for a movement that truely does turn provide this access via public utility, what can I do? Attach an open wireless broadband router to my home network? Possibly with a firewall that only allows traffic over port 80, 21, 22, etc?
I'd be willing to invest a couple of hunder bucks. But the problem as I see it is that we're really really far from the critical mass. So far in fact that altough I live a couple of blocks from Downtown Nashville, I wouldn't really have a way of telling others in my neighborhood about the access. I could put a sign in my yard, but I don't believe that would encourage others to cooperate by also providing public access.
I've read that in other cities like Seattle and Boston people are starting to get together but it's so fringe right now that I just don't see it happening in my area for a long time...
