If it were up to Microsoft (or Sun, or HP, or you-name-them), the Net would never have been built.
I wouldn't be so sure about making that sort of claim. The people within those companies were instrumental in building the net. They made decisions about what was worth doing, what needed to be done, and did it. Perhaps altruism, perhaps an extension of what s/he needed at the moment, perhaps just the joy of tinkering with something and making it go.
At the very least, "those companies" provided a laissez-faire environment that allowed things to incubate. The discussion seems to center around Microsoft, so perhaps your "whatever" list has just distracted me. I don't think Microsoft did much to build the net, but they have done a fantastic job of exploiting it, and in the process, created a community of users much larger than we had in the bearded days.
