Years actually do get shorter as you age. Think about it. The fist year of your life is your whole life. The second year is 1/2 your life. If you continue this progression each year gets shorter 1, 1/2, 1/3/, 1/4... 1/20,.. So your life is a harmonic series, which can be shown to diverge.
