Doc, your mention of Bob Kauffman and pickup games at Guilford does bring back memories. I recall one pickup game in the old Alumni gym with Kauffman and several members of the basketball team during the off season. As fate would have it, I was on Kauffman's team. He was a monster on the court but like every big man he had a hankering to play guard. On one play Bob snagged the rebound, raced up court like a point guard while I streaked (actually ran as fast as I could without falling) down one side of the court cutting toward the basket. Kauffman sees that I am open moving toward the basket and unleashes a behind the back pass after a cross-over dribble. The pass was so damn hard that it literally knocked me down --I thought I had both a broken wrist and rib from the sheer impact of the pass. The memory is worth a chuckle now but it wasn't very funny getting up off the floor instead of making an easy layup!
