Doc, I've been using SharePod with my 4Gb iPod mini, with no problems, and no iTunes. I'm sorry this one is Windows only, though.
Before my shuffle died, I had a program to rebuild the catalog without iTunes on that as well. Now, that program was written in Python, so it would run on ANY host.
I bought most of my CDs back when Napster made it easy to find new music... and stopped buying them once the RIAA decided to bite the hand that feeds it, so I don't worry about downloading things... I already have my music in MP3 format.
It is possible to break out of the silo. Of course, being aware of the silo walls is the first step towards escape.
