Eleventh - Give readers an ad-free subscription option so that those readers who want to support the journalism with their dollars can support the journalism with their dollars.
But let me be clear -- this is a subscription to the newsroom. It has to be priced to support the journalism, not the bloated and expensive advertising delivery system.
I recommend setting up the newsroom as an independent, non-profit service organization that licenses its product to anybody/everybody who wants to distribute it, whether its by daily ad-filled paper, or monthly glossy magazine, or minute-by-minute RSS feed. As a non-profit, the only fiduciary obligation is to cover the cost of producing the product by any/all means, beit grants, fundraisers, subscriptions, or licensing fees.
In the developing Mindshare Economy, journalism will be in an extraordinarily influential position, but it has to dump the baggage of archaic and inane arguments about distribution business models. Journalism is not distribution, and journalists would do well to separate themselves from the fretting of the distributors, even if they are currently employed by a distributor.
