Citizen journalism will inevitably be the work of the obsessed.
When I worked, thousands of years ago, for local newspapers (in middle class suburban New Jersey towns), ALL the stringers were middle or lower middle class. Wives of cops were well represented.
Some cared about cars and traffic. Others about recreation. Others about sports. Others about retail. Others about public safety.
Citizen journalism is a new name for stringers, I think.
The problem for the papers is that they don't know that many of their stringers are now also bloggers. And they need to tie those together.
