Passport as Infomediary.
Hi, Doc.
I wrote a little assessment on a future direction for Microsoft Passport at http://dijest.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$361.
The gist: Passport is a wedge technology, foot-in-the-door stuff, Microsoft's first serious infomediary play. An infomediary is an organization you trust to help you collect, store, manage, and use your information. There is enormous value to an individual in knowing
- their information is safe,
- access to it is controlled, and
- it is convenient to widely apply the data whenever, wherever, and however desired.
Your ID and credit cards are just the first step for Microsoft. Look for full custody services for your financial data (vs/with Intuit, Visa), career data (Monster, ADP), and entertainment data (Disney, AOLTimeWarner). Between web and mobile services, the utility of sharing your profiles on demand will grow with the network.
This calls for trust, and Microsoft is earning it every day with Hotmail and Passport. In a recent survey, Americans trust Microsoft to run the country over any other company.
