The stupidity of local (and many national) papers in this regard is hard to figure. When I worked at the Times Herald Record in Middletown, NY, the publisher was always bragging about Web site traffic, claiming hundreds of thousands of visitors and then, in the next breath, getting excited by, like, 25,000 registered users. So, you consider it success when hundreds of thousands of people are content to read your headlines and a story or two but don't consider your content worthwhile enough to register to get to the meat of it? Or at least bother enough to do what I do and go to bugmenot.com?
