Olympus
The only thing that scares me about the Olympus is the flash location. I use a Canon S70 as my 'pocket' digital, and a much bigger (film) Canon SLR for my 'art' photos. The SLR has Canon's pop up flash, which is actually quite effective and minimzes redeye and over brightness. The S70 has this problem, which I put down in large part to the proximity of the lens and flash.
But one thing Canon does has is very easy to use 'presets', such as 'landscapes, action, night, closeup, etc" which may be what your wife is looking for.
I'm not 100%, but I believe Canon EOS lens are interchangable with Canon camcorders (at least the bigger ones). That is something I'm considering now that I'm shopping for an HD camcorder. I have to do some more research though.
