Shots up
| | Just added a bunch of new pix to my SXSW 2006 set, including the one above, shot during lunch at the Ironworks, a barbecue place above the Red River, behind the Austin Convention Center. Perfect weather, perfect company. And even a performing snapping turtle. |
Supersound me
| | Look up Starbucks refuge and you get 234,000 results. (Today, anyway. Tomorrow, 4 billion. Or, 325.) This came to mind a few days ago when I was sitting in a Starbucks in Coronado, CA, annoyed at how loud the music had become in Starbucks stores, now that the chain had expanded its trade from coffee and muffins to audio CDs. An older gentleman (meaning, a guy about my age), in getting up to leave, remarked that Starbucks' original mission was to serve as a "place of refuge", or something like that. Not any more. |
| | Hey, I've got no problem with selling music, but why play it loud as a disco? Unless it's to drive customers away. |
| | Is there a Quiet Starbucks site yet? Needs to be. |
Missing out
| | This is when, every year, I go to PC Forum. This year, however, I had a prior commitment to a Cluetrain panel at SXSW, which is also fun. But I miss being at Esther's (as it's also known, ever since Esther Dyson took over the show in 1983 or something). |
| | Meanwhile, here in Austin, word came last night that Chris Locke's plane didn't show up for his flight here from Denver, so he won't be making the Cluetrain Seven Years Later panel this morning at SXSW. |
| | I also guessed that it would be hot as hell here today again. So now I'm sitting here in a Starbucks, in my shorts, shivering at the thought of going back out in the fesh cold and walking over to the conference. At least the laptop is warm. |

doc, check out delocator.net
http://www.delocator.net/index.php
from their site:
"The mission of Delocator.net is to assist the public in finding and supporting independently owned cafés. On the results page for each search, listings of both independently owned cafés and Starbucks retail stores are presented. By comparison of quantity and user-created information, Delocator.net users will be able to make an informed decision about spending a buck (or three) on a cup of joe."
In other words, put in a zip code to find a cafe that's a Starbucks alternative, wherever you are.

I once called Starbucks to complain because every location I visited had Alanis Morisette on a continual loop. When I called their complaint line I was put on hold. The song that was playing... "Isn't It Ironic?"
