"In fact, the asymmetrical build-outs of service to homes has done enormous harm to market growth by preventing countless small and home Net-based businesses from starting and growing."
While at Vignette two years ago, I got into quite a discussion with a young woman from our San Francisco office. Seems she lived in some loft building that had, as she claimed, "...and we have 10mbps of bandwidth." "Huh!?!" I wondered aloud. "Is it symmetrical or assymetrical?" Symmetrical, she assured me.
Living with my cable 4-5mpbs down and 384kbps up, I was astounded and pushed her hard on details. I was convinced she had it and asked her if she loved it. "I do" she continued, "Except for the guy upstairs with his server rack and fans that run all the time keeping them cool."
Didn't know his business but the point is clear: even I would be running my own server in my house if I could get bandwidth affordably (especially 10mpbs up-n-down). There would be an absolute explosion of innovation in this country if we all could.
