MacBookPro and PCMCIA cards
Doc, the new MacBook Pro does include a card slot. The supported format is ExpressCard/34, the next generation of PCMCIA cards from the alliance that created PCMCIA. So this is less an instance of Apple making up its own standard than a case of moving to a new standard, much like the move to USB in the original iMac. Downside, of course, is the huge number of available PCMCIA cards and the lack of forward compatibility with the ExpressCard standard, particularly the 34 mm version.
There's a good illustration of the different types of ExpressCards on the ExpressCard site.
