Happy Thankspending Day 
| | I was wondering yesterday if the day after Thanksgiving was actually the biggest shopping day of the year. The occasion for this wondering is our transient presence in (actually, near) the Bay Area, which has us thinking about making a run into San Francisco to visit a store where they sell sturdy home espresso machines. Like we need an excuse. |
| | Then I heard something on the radio about how today really isn't the biggest shopping day. So this morning, here at the motel, I thought I'd check Snopes on the matter. And hey, it ain't even close. |
| | But, I'm thinking, what about all those daily newspapers, thickened with flyers and supplements by the urban legend about this being such a big shopping day and all? |
| | At least it's good that all this recycling material is keeping the newspapers in business, which in turn is keeping civilization running, even though Bob Woodward turns out to be a White House PR operative embedded in the Washington Post. Hey, civilization depends more on retailing than uncorruptable journalism. Gotta keep our perspective here. |
| | So let's compensate for lost myth by naming the day. I thought at first that "Consumption Day" would be good, but then I remembered the formerly familiar meaning of the C word. So instead I've chosen Thankspending Day. |
