Electionics
| | Today is an off-year election, with a few national races in the spotlight. The big action out here on the Far Coast is a raft of initiatives, also known as propositions, or props. |
| | It's playing (because it is) as a showdown between a videogenic Republican governor and ... I'll let Chris Nolan explain. |
| | I'm betting all the props will plop. FWIW, I voted no on all but 77. Our districts are politcally drawn, and 77 purports to end that. We'll see. |
| | By the way, I absentee-voted (one of Chris's subjects) for the first time. Liked it a lot better than the old-fashioned way. |
Wisdom of the (p)ages

Stern punishment
| | I listened to a few minutes of Howard Stern yesterday morning, thanks to fortuitous wave conditions between San Diego and Santa Barbara. (Howard's L.A. station barely comes in here, regardless of the weather). There was a lot of chatter about losing the Las Vegas affiliate, and enough stuff about Howard's new Sirius Satellite Radio gig to suggest that the dude's numbered days on over-the-air radio are winding down faster than the calendar. |
| | Now I read on Jeff Jarvis (and Howard's site, which is linkproof on this story) that H was suspended a day (today) for overpromoting the Sirius Thing. |
| | Sometime this week I'll be testing out a new Sirius hookup (and not just for Howard). Look for more about the Larger Story over at IT Garage. |
Holding handhelds
| | It's a cool device. Go read about it. Lots of links to follow there. |

Web 2.0 is interesting, the idea of having services available across the net... cute, but what I really want is App 2.0. In App 2.0, we still do things in a document centric manner, or perhaps a task-centric manner. The main improvements are more along the lines of user interaction.
A good "app 2.0" application does a few things differently:
<!--break-->
- Always show the path of the current document
- Never permit a user to start work if there isn't an autosave method up and running
- If the path becomes unavailable, ask the user what they want to do about it immediately
- Support RESTfull paths
- Disconnection is a fact of life, NEVER lose work because of it
There's no reason for closing a web browser to lose information with AJAX. There is no reason why an application can't keep its state stored on the server, where it belongs. Closing the wrong browser window should never lead to a trail of tears.
Windows applications are no better. It's especially gaulling when a Windows Application with 200 Gigabytes free can't be bothered to save an hour or two of typing in a few places.
This is the 21st Century... don't lose my work any more!
--Mike--
Note: I tried to post this over at IT garage, and only after doing the preview a few times and getting it just right... it lost my work! Oh, the Irony!

Even cooler would be a service that allowed a website to have some other service (with a different URL) to back up the session in case of failure.
I'm getting paranoid about these things for some reason.

I haven't had that happen over there. But then, your mileage may vary.
Look at it this way: we're not done with The Past. Not by a long shot.
