Checking in and out
We're here.
It rained almost all the way down, and we passed some scary-looking mudslides along 101 through the Gaviota Pass (I guess that's what it's called). But it was clear and bright in Santa Barbara as the full moon came up over the mountains.
After we hauled boxes and our little bit of furniture up the stairs and went out to dinner at some friends' house, we came back and crashed on the floor. There was no heat, so we huddled under comforters. My back hurts like hell, but I can live with it.
Leticia took Jeffrey to the beach early this morning and he immediately wanted to go back; so they did. It's two blocks away.
The cable guy came, and it took two hours for the modem to register itself with the system, but it finally did and here we are. Man, it's fast. Real Bandwidth (at least on the downstream side here at the house the upstream side doesn't matter much). I'm listening to an Internet radio station and it sounds great. Nice.
But this is on my laptop. Joyce's old Mac says An error occurred while trying to start up your AppleTalk connection. The built-in LocalTalk port will be used instead. That sucks. I've tried killing off all but the System 8.6 extensions. Makes no difference. When the little init icons appear during start-up, red Xs appear over the Ethernet one, which appears twice (each X'd). Not sure what that means. Suggested trouble-shots are welcome.
Now we drive the U-Haul over to the new office and haul all the computer boxes out and up those stairs. It might be Monday before we're on line there.
Still need phone numbers and all. Lots of stuff to do.
But man, what a beautiful town. Loving it alreay.
