Camera Strategy
"I don't have to heft a contraption the size of a surface-to-air missle launcher up to my eyeball and set off conditioned responses (Smile for the camera!) in the direction it's pointed.."
Just heft...point..shoot...faster, much faster. If you can point it and release the shutter instaneously, they won't have time to react. Then put the camera down, and turn away. The crowd will soon learn to ignore you.
Just make sure you have a camera which will focus and shoot instaneously.
