Re: Wednesday, August 31, 2005
Doc, I pray that you are right, and that it really will change our priorities. And yes, it will bring up issues of race and class, and the discussion won't be pretty. The RNC sent out an email today calling for repeal of the estate tax, and not mentioning this catastrophe at all. Like the picture of Bush playing guitar on Tuesday, or Bush saying on ABC today that "no one could have predicted this", it will have an effect on the disucssion.
Frankly, I don't have much hope for changes in national investment, or in priorities, while this administration retains power. I hope to God that you're right, and I'm wrong.
It is hard to tell, at this point, how much preplanning was done. Unfortunately, the answer appears to be not much. What no one - literally, as far as I can tell - has talked about or dealt with yet are the folks who lived in the bayeau country. A 20-foot storm surge would probably have scoured those homes, often not much more than shacks, and hard to get to in the best of conditions. These are people who are off the grid, profoundly off the grid, and who in many cases would have had no warning at all. The likelihood is that this is far, far worse in terms of death than we're ready to deal with, yet.
