Still home
| | I'm writing this on the bunk where I'll soon be sleeping, on the front porch of my Aunt Grace's house, a former grist mill built in 1726, which she and her family have occupied for almost sixty years. |
| | Grace is 93 years old now, and lives here alone, taking care of the place, and herself, remarkably well. |
| | I arrived around 10:30pm last night (only a few hours ago) with my daughter Colette, fresh from the final performance of Basura!, her very entertaining trash-puppet show at the Fringe festival in New York. |
| | It gave me sweet chills to step out of the car, into the warm damp air, still misty from the afternoon rain, surrounded by the sounds of frogs and crickets, the smells of rural Monmouth County filling my nose. (I see the rain raised Big Brook, which runs behind the house.) |
| | It's amazing to the verge of miraculous that Grace and this place are still here. I'm 58 now, and so many locations of childhood memories are long gone or changed beyond recognition. But this one stands, much as it's been all along (still, for example, with no air conditioning, but plenty of fans). |
| | My one regret is absent connectivity. I can get on through bluetooth over the cell phone if I locate the phone out in the yard somewhere; and still it's slow. |
| | I had wanted to tune in to the OPML meetup Dave had told me about earlier this week. But I couldn't find any good neighborhood Wi-Fi at the late hour we arrived. I had hoped to get on through Grace's cable modem, but that disn't work, either. By the time I got the bluetooth setup to communicate, it was probably too late. (Though I'm glad to see something happened, anyway.) |
| | So now it's 1:33am (10:33, body time, still in sync with the West Coast), and I'm going to bed. |
| | I'll be here until Sunday afternoon, with very limited connectivity (or even cell phone coverage); so expect light blogging. |

Jeez, Doc, you're practically within spitting distance of my house in Middletown. Clearly this is a lightning visit, but maybe one of these days when you're in the area we can get together at a local diner and talk about radio.
