The twisty tail and An Ode To The Cluetrain Gang
First off, about the tail being twisty. We know that people up and down the length of the tail are linked together. Aa more natural visualization of the tail would be a 3D map showing clusters of blogs, some slightly taller, others shorter, scattered across a landscape. Only so many people live in the high rises; most live in small houses or small apartment buildings, clustered around topics or whatever interests them.
There was a thread on http://brandingbranding.com about the definition of branding. Irked me. My response...
http://theblogpost.blogspot.com/2005/06/ode-to-cluetrain-gang.html
My answer:
What is branding to me?
Branding is when you say to yourself,
"that slab of meat on the hoof is mine,"
and with focus and intensity
you knock your victim down,
hold down their protesting limbs,
ignore their eyes wide with terror
as you wield a
fiery
hot
sharp
glowing
metal
brand
shaped with your mark,
then push it down into their writhing flesh,
smell the burning flesh and hair,
holding it,
screams vague as you concentrate,
keep holding it steady,
must make it deep,
and jumping back
as they sob in pain and
hold the bloody wound you've inflicted
and the scarring
that will mark them for life
as much as
the very act of branding.
And every time they walk down the street
and see someone with a mark,
they feel sympathy for the violation.
And each time they see someone with the same mark,
they feel their anger anew
and conspire revenge.

Phil Wolff, "Brand Genius"
Each year the spirits of Doc Searls and David Weinberger rub off on me just a bit more. Rageboy too. We talk about personal branding and blog branding, but the attitude, the fundamental assumptions are just immoral and wrong. Not saying I have an alternative, but "humane" and "conversation" are still not in the average marketers' lexicon. And they should be.
All the best.
