Coda
| | Linda Martinez was one of those names I sort-of knew. I had seen or heard features about her prodigious talent, her awards. |
| | Not sure. But it made me sad to read about her death today, by suicide. Just 29 years old. She was one of the two or tree most gifted young composers we've ever had, said her composition professor. |
| | You don't measure losses like that. You just know an unknown sum of goodness will fail to grace the world. |
K(some of)YOU
| | Tried listening live to KYOU on the Linux ThinkPad, and got ... |
| | Your Computer Configuration does not Support our Audio Service |
| | Your Operating System or Computer is not Supported |
| | Our audio service requires Microsoft Windows 98 or later. Supported operating systems include... (four Windows versions) |
| | Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, Macintosh OS and Linux are not supported at present. |
| | Yet I could listen just fine on my OS X laptop. |
| | So, dudes, if you're going to podcast, at least run an MP3 and/or an OGG stream, like other open webcasters. |
| | The requirement for an ActiveX browser component in order to listen to the stream should be eliminated. The station has received these shows in mp3 format. Most modern browsers understand how to handle mp3 files without the additional proprietary and security concerns introduced by the ActiveX component. The streaming url for the station should be pointed to a .pls file. All current mp3 players - both proprietary and open source - understand how to handle these files or can be easily configured to do so. In short, the stream has to be friendly for Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/Safari users as well as IE users. |
| | Much more there. Read the whole thing. And thank the folks at KYOU for agreeing to let Tony post the email. |
| | Unrelated: Somewhere I have an open reel tape, recorded sometime in the early '60s, of KKHI KYOU's ancestor on 1550am in Maywood, New Jersey. The station at the time was just 5,000 watts at night (now it's 10,000), and just as directional as they are now (to the Northwest of the transmitter by Highway 101 in Belmont, aimed toward San Francisco). But I think they were testing in non-directional mode while the station they protected on the channel Classical CBE in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit), was off the air for transmitter maintenance. For many years, KKHI was a landmark classical AM and FM station. The classical format was dropped in 1994. |
| | Ah, I just found this remarkable history of the station (up through the late '90s), by Fred Krock, who has been around Bay Area radio since 1950. provides a terrific long-view perspective on what's happening today. He was with the station for many years; and I imagine he was manning the transmitter when I heard it in New Jersey. |
Blogfodder
| | Your Birthdate: July 29 Your birthday on the 29th adds a tone of idealism to your nature. (true) You are imaginative and creative, but rather uncomfortable in the business world. (used to be true; not any more) You are very aware and sensitive, with outstanding intuitive skills and analytical abilities. (intuitive, sure; analytical? well...) |
| | The 29 reduces to 11, one of the master numbers which often produces much nervous tension. (yeah, I'm still kinda fidgety) This is the birthday of the dreamer rather than the doer. (ouch: true) You do, however, work very well with people (true). |
| | Also tried it with the birthdays of four other people I know, and it matched up remarkably well. A surprising statement, since the first thing my wife heard me say was, "I'm a Leo, so I don't believe in astrology." |
And it's a good one, too

I had a discussion by phone with Steve Page from KYOU this week. He also called Michael Butler to follow-on with some comments Michael and I made on Sunday's Rock and Roll Geek Show - namely that I didn't plan on submitting any more Roadhouse shows to them. He was interested in what it would take to get The Roadhouse in a regular slot on the station.
Sensing an opportunity, I sent him an email addressing both my concerns about the station and many of the concerns I've seen in discussions online. Surprisingly, in the spirit of discussion, he agreed to posting the full text of that email on The Roadhouse site:
http://www.roadhousepodcast.com/2005/05/the_kyouradio_e.html
I'd love to have further comments on the suggestions made in the email, as the KYOU staff does seem genuinely interested in resolving the burning issues in the podcasting community.

At least KYOU is streaming.. Up until recently KYOU's parent, Infinity, did not allow their stations to stream AT ALL. Also, at least KYOU's stream works on a Mac. I still can't get WXRT's (same company) "AOL Radio" stream on my Mac.
