Re: Google sour grapes!
This is a test of Google's mettle. If the Deja code indeed has no value to Google, they should turn the code loose. Put it on SouceForge or something. It's the right thing to do.
This is utter crap. Google rescues an incredibly valuable archive of information and decides not to incorporate the codebase that filters and handles posts into their own systems, and everyone goes ape-shit. I don't get it.
Maybe I'm missing something, but if Google hadn't bought the remaining assets of Deja.com, there would be no archive easily accessible anywhere.
And, it appears that everyone is annoyed as well that Google is going to take some time to appropriately integrate this into their systems. I suppose everyone wants them to hire 50 programmers and through millions in resources at it - given that this only helped to run Deja.com out of business.
Google is an incredible resource. I feel like folks are missing the point of the Deja.com acquisition. It's a good thing for Google, it's a good thing for the Net, but it doesn't mean that they have to reproduce Deja.com to placate folks. They need to follow their own bliss and put the Google stamp on it so it works with their systems and their needs for their business.
