Final Mustang Report
| | I did get some drive time on side roads in the red rental Mustang, and here's my final take on the car... |
| | First, it's one of the best-handling cars I've ever driven. Steering is tight and accurate, and the thing turns like it's on rails. Body lean is zero, and the road feel is terrific. Engine sounds are what you'd like from a performance car, and the braking is solid. |
| | Second, visibility kinda sucks. The bulging hood obscures more road than I'd like, and the view out the back windows is minimal. The seat height adjustment helps, toward the front anyway. Entering the cockpit is a tight squeeze, but the seats have terrific support and are comfortable for long drives. (Though the shoulder belt, anchored far back on the pillar — it's a two-door — is a bit tight and got tiresome after about 300 miles.) Be sure to use the cruise. It's easy to go way too fast on the open road. I was lucky to make it throught he speed traps in King City and Santa Maria. |
| | Third, it's a sports car, basically. Think of it as a Miata with American manners that can seat four, and with a working trunk as a bonus. (The trunk opening is small, though.) Or as a ' Vette with more room, nearly as much vroom, and a better price. |
| | Fourth, like I said the other day, the thing is a driving machine that cries out for a stick shift. The automatic works okay, but it's a waste in a car like this one. That was confirmed by Sam Abuelsamid's post yesterday. Get one with a stick, leather and an upgraded audio system, so it will play mp3 CDs. |
| | Depending on the repair record (unknown so far), it seems like a good deal for the money. |
| | I'd still rather rent a Focus, though. That baby may not be the best-built ride in the world (a body piece fell off the first one I rented), but it's the best-handling small sedan on the market, with lots of other virtues as well (including an MP3 CD player, standard). |
