Better rat trap
Rolling
| | Bernie DeKoven revisits Skee-Ball, the arcade sport we loved to play as kids on the boardwalks at Point Pleasant, Asbury Park and Seaside Heights. The Jersey Shore ("da shaw" or "down da shaw") didn't lack for boardwalks in those days. Brings back memories of never winning a damn thing, but always enjoying the game anyway. |

It's a shame that Paul apparently hasn't kept up with his Inconspicuous Consumption schtick. That site hasn't been updated in over three years. I was a huge fan of his fanzine "Beer Frame", which was the original repository of his reviews of everyday consumer products. In fact, I just found my old Beer Frame bowling shirt the other day when I was cleaning out a closet. Reading Beer Frame made it impossible for me to just go to the grocery store; my wife and I to this day nudge each other when we see something worthy of a Paul Lukas review. My mom was a big fan, too.
Several years ago, Paul collected a lot of this stuff in a book, "Inconspicuous Consumption: An Obsessive Look at the Stuff We Take for Granted, from the Everyday to the Obscure". It's long out of print, but you can get a used copy through Amazon or abebooks.com.

Is the shore lacking in boardwalks these days? I haven't been down south on my most recent trips but it's still all wood from the north end of Asbury to Spring Lake.

Dunno.
I visited Asbury Park about three years ago, and it was under reconstruction. Passed by Point Pleasant, and was surprised to see it was still there. Haven't been to Seaside Heights since '61 or so.
