"Google consumers are very much, in this respect, like commercial broadcasting's consumers: powerless. They can't say "I'll take my business elsewhere," because they have no business to take."
"Is there a plug-in architecture for this thing?"
There's no plug-in architecture for AutoLink because it is itself a plug-in. Really, that's all it is.
Even if AutoLink becomes available in FireFox on Linux, I probably won't use it because its features don't overlap with my needs. However, I'm sure there will be other tools in this category that do things I'd like to use.
People are concerned with Google because it's a big company and this feature comes built-in to their tool that a lot of people chose to install. In the process, they're tossing the whole category.
I'm glad I use open-source tools because they seem a lot more immune to "bad monopoly" manipulation and yet will still provide me the features I want. This is a non-issue for me.
