Your tax dollars at rest
Al Kamen of the Washington Post reports this conversational scenario:
Say you come across a neighbor planning to blow up the city with a homemade atomic bomb. What to do? Quick! Dial 324-6000. There'll be a lot of rings. Then a metallic female voice: "Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice messaging system. [Pause] The mailbox belonging to . . . [pause, then a male voice comes on] FBI's weapons of mass destruction hot line. . . . " then the female, "is full. To disconnect, press one. . . ."
The Post also reports on a Clinton-Gore cat fight and a Bush Bonding session. Funny stuff in the second story about California conservatives and the Sharon election in Israel ("Buchanan came in second").

eWeek has a story about Microsoft's first embedded conference. Interesting stuff, since Linux has quietly taken a big lead in the embedded space. Embedded in the story: The goal is to optimize Talisker for all alliance partners' architectures by giving them access to the source code. Talikser is the new moniker for Windows CE. Microsoft also has embedded plans for Whistler, which is the next generation of Windows 2000.
