We live on the only western coast in the U.S. that faces almost due south. Which is why they call it the South Coast. In fact that small edge of the Pacific is a bit South of East; but as the Winter Solstice approaches, the Sun rises farther and farther to the South. In the Summer, it rises North of the Santa Monicas, and over land. We get treated to this scene only from November-February.
