Russia, dogs, and 9-11
As a "habit" from my old line of work, I find myself monitoring a number of Russian media sites, more so now than normal given the tragedy that unfurled.
A couple interesting points (mainly from themowscowtimes.com).
* Apparently the first casualties of the attack were lying on the yard and were being eaten by a pack of rabid dogs. The people where shot in the initial attack and their corpses were out for several days. Police wanted to shoot the dogs, but were afraid of scaring the terrorists. They worked out a deal to pick up the bodies, but when they went to get the, well, that's when everything started getting insane.
* A common quote I've seen from some Russians is "our government does nothing about terror." In fact, one mentioned "The US was attacked on 9-11 and hasn't been hit since. Here in Russia it just goes on and on..." I don't know, I just found that quote / attitude amongst the Russians kind of interesting.
* If you read the Georgian papers, they're more than happy to point out that much of the arms smuggling in this region comes through South Ossetia, where the Russian "peace keepers" have basically been acting like mafia bosses running in drugs and weapons to anyone who wants to buy them. Some of my anti-Russian Georgian friends have a kind of "what did you (Russia) expect--your military gave them the guns?"
Anyway, just some odd observations....
