Re: OS X Questions
Hi Doc -- I have a few questions. They're detail-oriented, so I don't know how useful they'll be for you. But here they are:
1. Will I be able to connect to other machines via AppleTalk when the other machine does *not* support AppleTalk over TCP/IP?
In other words, I need to set up file-sharing connections to older Macs and a PC that runs PC MacLAN.
2. Will the various appearance attributes of Aqua be customizable?
In other words, I'd like to turn off anti-aliasing for text below a certain size. I'd like to to turn off translucent menus and title bars. I'd like to remove all drop shadows.
3. If Apple has a single-OS strategy, then what is OS X Server?
Related: will the various components of OS X Server be made available to OS X users who want to run a lightweight or personal server?
4. Will it be possible to extend the Finder's contextual menus?
I'm a developer: I've written some CMMs for OS 9 that I miss in OS X.
Related: will commands such as Clean Up be added to the Finder's contextual menu.
5. Will Apple begin shipping two-button mice?
I note that there is already support for a right mouse button. (I have a two-button mouse from another hardware vendor.)
6. Will it be possible to rename files and folders in the Finder?
Right now you can do so only when in icons view. In columns or list view you can't.
7. Will the performance of 1.0 be better than the performance of the public beta?
Dragging and resizing windows, for instance, is slow. (In fact, I'd like to be able to turn off opaque windows, just get an outline when I move or resize a window.)
8. Will there be a GUI interface for enabling the SSH daemon?
9. Will I have to blow away my OS X PB installation to install 1.0?
10. Is Apple doing anything with the Mozilla folks to help get Fizzilla stable and useful?
This is another way of asking what are the limits of Apple's committment to Open Source.
11. Many people have wondered if Terminal.app will be included with 1.0. There are passionate arguments on both sides of the issue. Will it be included? (Note: I most sincerely hope and expect so.)
12. I note that Perl is included with OS X PB. Python was not included. Will it be included in 1.0, now that Python 2.0 exists for OS X?
13. What about including the Carbon version of Stuffit Expander? (This is perhaps the single best thing one can do for the average user. In my opinion.)
14. How about viewing man pages in the Apple Help Viewer? (This last question is just so I don't end with 13 questions.)
