"(which is not to say that women can't learn to do it as well as men)." the irony is that tannen has made a living describing what seperates us while almost completely ignoring what draws us together. her work on gender is basically "men are from mars, women are from venus" with a slightly larger vocabulary, allowing it to pass as "academic." if women can adopt "men's culture," what exactly makes it "men's" culture? after reading a few of tannen's books, this is a question i've never seen her answer, yet the concept of gendered culture is the basis of almost everything she writes.
