Stern's response from R an R..
The WXRK/New York-based syndicated morning host, who has worked with outgoing Viacom President/COO Mel Karmazin for more than 18 years, told listeners this morning that “there is no guy who can calm me down as much as Mel.” Stern noted that Karmazin merged his own company, Infinity, with Viacom and that he is the victim of a “pissing match with Sumner that got out of hand.” Stern said, “I don’t understand how Mel could resign. He resigned; I’m in shock. He’s my backup here. I don’t know that Sumner would back me up. This is definitely the nail in my coffin.” WXRK VP/GM Tom Chiusano told Stern that he was unaware of Karmazin’s departure until an official release from the company was sent out this morning. “It’s a sad day,” Chiusano said. Stern sidekick Robin Quivers added later that the show “has no friends” at Infinity anymore and said, “This is over.” Meanwhile, Stern hinted that a move to Sirius or XM could be in the works. “I am ready to end radio as you know it. I see the future, and the future is not this,” he said.
During a 10 am conference call Sumner Redstone said the one of Les's tasks will be to evaluate if they should keep the radio group.. There is also some talk among the disdent Disney shareholders of Mel working for the mouse, replacing Eisner.
