Making it home
Chill out
Becoming game
| | My father was a Bvooklyn Dodgers fan, and therefore so was I. But we lived in New Jersey and getting over to Ebbetts Field was a major chore, so we only went to see Da Bums play at Da Polo Grounds, which was where Da Giants played. Da Polo Grounds were just across the narrow end of Manhattan from Da Geowge Washington Bidge. And in those days there were only a dozen teams or so in each league, so the locals played each other much more often. |
| | When the Dodgers left Brooklyn, I transfered my loyalty to the Giants. Then the Giants left. There was no way I'd be a Yankees fan (although we went to plenty of games at Yankee Stadium). So I was rescued, like so many other abandoned National League New Yawk fans, by Da Mets, managed by the old Yank himself, Casey Stengel. |
| | Da Mets won it all in '69. |
| | But when they lost to Oakland in '73, I gave up and moved to North Carolina the next Winter, and became a devout college basketball fan. (I was a Knicks fan too, but that's another story.) |
| | About a generation later I moved to California, where I became a Giants fan again. But not a big one. Went to a few games at the 'stick, and a few more over at Oakland (got to see McGuire hit some of his first home runs there). |
| | Then I got busy and baseball got expensive, and I kinda lost interest. |
| | Now I'm in Santa Barbara, and I'm thinking I should take my seven year old boy to a ball game. The Dodgers are actually good this year. (Though I've still not forgiven them.) The Giants are having an off year, but I'd like to see PacBell (excuse me, SBC) Park. So the gears are turning in my brain... |

I go to see a local club league team, the North Shore Spirit, in Lynn, MA. Tickets are $4. That's right, four whole American dollars.
Play is entertaining, spirited, fun to watch. There are cheesy little promotions. And hey, if the game gets rained out, or it's not the fastest or most fun game, you're not going to feel gypped. I tell you, I have always gotten at least $12 of entertainment out of every game, and at least one was worth $100.
The problem with major league sports is that going (parking, tickets, food) costs so much you have to expect every time to be a peak experience. And it's too expensive to develop a relationship with a team.
Look for minor league, farm team, and unaffiliated club leagues, buy a "fan package" for twelve games a season. I guarantee you'll have a blast. Then go to see the big leagues once a year, on a birthday or special occasion.
Oh: www.minorleaguebaseball.com (and just for laughs, www.northshorespirit.com).
