There are deep waters here Doc. Should you have a spare day or so to study this phenomenon, I personally recommend Bernard Lietaer's book The Future of Money for a quick overview of what (one economist's view at least) of what money actually is.
Among many other fascinating points, Lietaer makes a strong case that using money to store value (such as in interest bearing bank accounts) instead of purchasing income producing assets (such as improvements in, e.g. farm production systems) is at the heart of the wild instabilities evident in current national currencies (think hyperinflation).
The similarities between the online role-playing games currencies (and other value laden items), and the community based currency systems advocated in Lietaer's book are striking.
