Actually, if I'm reading the Java applet correctly, the "bullseye" is ~0.32 A.U. away. (In other words, not even close enough for horseshoes! :-)
The apparent closeness of the visualisation is a projection artifact. Slide the slider on the RHS of the applet to "tilt" in that plane and the true geometry becomes apparent.
Anyway, with luck (and clear skies) this will be a pretty comet from Perth! Sorry about Santa Barbara being hemispherically challenged...
