I am definitely only an casual hobbyist photographer, but the 5700 has been my only camera for the last year or so. My only irritation is the low-light focus (and hard to use manual focus) but in good lighting, it's been great - the macro pictures are great, even for this amateur. (see biltmore and the NCSU Arboretum). I bought the MB-E5700 battery pack, and with 6 Lithium double-a's the battery life is fantastic. It also makes give the camera a much better "feel" and grip. Very highly recommended accessory. (and likely fits the 8700, since it's the same form factor, but I don't know for sure).
